Taipei Zoo's Brown Bear "Xiao Qiao" Recovers from Tumor Surgery

Taipei Zoo's temperate zone is home to a brown bear named "Xiao Qiao", who recently underwent surgery to remove a tumor. Following the first week of recovery from the surgical wound, Xiao Qiao's activity level and appetite have gradually improved. This photo was taken in December 2024.

Xiao Qiao, an elderly and somewhat picky brown bear at Taipei Zoo, underwent tumor removal surgery last month. The zoo shared positive news about his recovery, stating that after the initial week of wound healing, Xiao Qiao's activity and appetite have been on the rise. The zoo is optimistic that he will soon regain his former vitality.

Xiao Qiao, estimated to be at least 24 years old, was abandoned by a circus in 2006 and was confiscated by the government. In March 2023, a health check revealed that he had breast cancer, which was successfully removed through surgery. He has been recovering well and undergoing regular follow-ups. However, an imaging examination on May 30, 2023, showed tumor metastasis in his lungs and thickening of his stomach wall. Despite these findings, Xiao Qiao's daily behavior, such as swimming, digging, and exploring, remained normal.

Recently, zookeepers and veterinarians discovered a suspected metastatic tumor near Xiao Qiao's inguinal region, accompanied by rupture. On March 24, the animal medical team performed anesthesia and surgery to treat him. During the procedure, blood tests showed no significant abnormalities, but imaging revealed worsening lung metastases. The medical team successfully removed the ruptured tumor and sutured the wound. Given the malignancy and large wound area, they continue to closely monitor his recovery.

After the first week of wound healing, the medical care team has been actively assisting Xiao Qiao in adapting to post-surgical pain and discomfort. They have implemented pain management and treatment, as well as various methods to stimulate his appetite. Seeing Xiao Qiao's activity and appetite gradually increase has brought joy to everyone involved. The zoo is focusing on dietary and environmental improvements, such as providing high-protein diets, probiotics, and diverse hay environments to stimulate Xiao Qiao's sense of smell. This allows him to naturally build his bed and roll, strengthening his physical and mental health and promoting post-operative recovery. The team looks forward to Xiao Qiao regaining his former vitality soon.
