Taipei MRT Launches Special Dog-Friendly Trains on April 12, Sparking Online Excitement

In celebration of International Pet Day, Taipei Metro operated special "dog-friendly trains" on the Tamsui-Xinyi Line starting April 12, allowing passengers to bring their dogs onboard without cages, enabling the pets to freely explore the train cars. This initiative attracted widespread attention and enthusiasm from the public, with many netizens expressing a strong desire to ride these unique trains.

The Taipei Metro's dog-friendly service began in the afternoon of April 12, opening the Tamsui-Xinyi Line to passengers accompanied by their dogs. Unlike regular pet policies that require pets to be confined in carriers, this event permitted dogs to roam inside the carriage as long as they were on a harness and leash, creating a more relaxed and enjoyable experience for both pets and owners.

On social media platform Threads, a user shared their experience riding the dog-friendly train and unexpectedly witnessed a lively scene of passengers arguing. The post included videos showing the train car filled not only with human passengers but also approximately four to five dogs. The dogs appeared excited and curious, sniffing around the carriage, which led to some commotion. For example, a poodle's leash got caught on a handrail, and a mixed-breed dog and a Jack Russell Terrier were seen having a noisy dispute, making the atmosphere quite lively and entertaining.

This post quickly went viral, garnering over 40,000 likes and more than 8,000 shares. Many commenters found the scene "super cute" and humorously remarked on the situation with comments such as "Feels like they're fighting over the priority seats," "Can older dogs sit in the priority seats?" and "I really want to ride this train." Some even called for more of such "large-scale quarrels" on the train, saying "This is the world I want to live in."

Other netizens shared their experiences waiting for the train, noting that the MRT staff made announcements to inform passengers that the current train was dog-friendly and advised those who might be uncomfortable to wait for the next regular train. This special service, they said, added a joyful atmosphere to the usually routine public transit experience.

The dog-friendly trains are part of Taipei Metro's ongoing efforts to create a pet-friendly public transportation environment, with clear guidelines to ensure safety and comfort for all passengers. Dogs must be on harnesses and leashes, and owners are responsible for their pets' behavior. The initiative also includes support from veterinary professionals, pet trainers, and extra cleaning staff onboard to assist during the service.
