Firefighting Training at Chinese Aquarium: Beluga Whale Steals the Show by Spraying Water to Extinguish Fire

Recently, a funny and cute scene unfolded at Dalian Sunasia Ocean World. During a fire safety demonstration, firefighters were explaining how to respond to a fire emergency inside the venue. As one firefighter prepared to light a fire inside a metal bucket for the demonstration, a beluga whale in the nearby pool unexpectedly swam over and sprayed water to extinguish the flames. The firefighter ended up soaked from head to toe by the whale's water spray.

The video shows a firefighter explaining fire response procedures to the staff, while another firefighter, wearing a yellow helmet and protective gear, ignited the fire in the metal bucket. Immediately, the beluga whale in the pool sprayed water towards the bucket, putting out the fire. The firefighter who lit the fire was drenched by the water spray, looking both helpless and embarrassed, and could only share a laugh with those nearby. After extinguishing the fire, the beluga proudly lifted its head above the water and made joyful sounds.

According to a report by Shangyou News, on April 7, a staff member at Sunasia Ocean World, Ms. Zheng (a pseudonym), explained that the beluga's water spray to put out the fire was not a performance but a genuine event that occurred during a fire drill on the afternoon of April 2. At that time, firefighters from Dalian were conducting fire drills and training at the sea world ahead of the Qingming holiday.

Ms. Zheng believes the beluga's action was a coincidence. The training took place right next to the beluga's pool, and the beluga named "Pomegranate" happened to be playing nearby. "Belugas are very intelligent. When you tease them, they spray water. They sensed something dangerous was happening and sprayed water," she said.

Originally, the firefighters were teaching the sea world staff how to use fire extinguishers. Unexpectedly, before the training even began, the beluga put out the open flame. After the drill, while chatting with those present, the beluga sprayed water at the firefighters again. "It's very playful, like a child. Although the firefighters got sprayed, they were quite happy about it," Ms. Zheng added.

The video sparked lively discussion online. Many praised the beluga as smart and spirited. Some joked that the beluga immediately extinguished the fire because the bucket was actually its feeding bucket. Ms. Zheng clarified, "No, no! That bucket was brought by the firefighters themselves, not a feeding bucket." She emphasized that the beluga's fire-extinguishing act will not become a performance item. "We want to properly guide how to extinguish fires and promote fire safety knowledge. Turning it into a show would be controversial and unnecessary for our sea world."
