A powerful earthquake struck central Myanmar, prompting international response efforts. Taiwan's National Fire Agency has prepared a rescue team of 126 personnel, including six search and rescue dogs and 15 tons of equipment, ready to assist if needed.
Earthquake Details
Although the initial report mentioned a magnitude 8.2 earthquake, the actual event was a 7.7-magnitude quake that occurred on March 28, 2025. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) initially estimated a high potential for casualties, but the Myanmar military government reported 694 deaths and 1,670 injuries as of the latest update.
Rescue Preparations
Taiwan's rescue team includes six doctors, seven nurses, two veterinarians, and two structural engineers. The team is equipped with 15 tons of rescue equipment and six search dogs. Additionally, the Tzu Chi Foundation has prepared disaster relief supplies, including food, blankets, and energy bars.
International Response
As of the latest update, five international rescue teams are actively deployed, including teams from Russia, Singapore, China, Malaysia, and the U.S. Taiwan is among 24 teams on standby, ready to respond if requested by Myanmar or Thailand. The Taiwanese government has expressed its willingness to assist both countries through its representative offices.
Coordination Efforts
The National Fire Agency has notified local fire departments to prepare for potential deployment. The agency's special rescue team is on full alert, with personnel from Pingtung County Fire Department also on standby.
