Is Your Cat Scared by the Renovation Noises at Home? Experts Share Soothing Tips: Prepare This 3 Days in Advance

Renovating your home can be a stressful experience, not only for you but also for your feline companions. Concerns about noise and unfamiliar activities can lead to anxiety in cats. To address these issues, we spoke with cat trainer Xiao Mi from HowCat, who provided insights on how to prepare your pets for renovations.

Preparation Before Renovation

If the renovation is short-term and your home has multiple rooms, it is advisable to allow your cat to acclimate to a quiet room furthest from the construction site. This will provide them with a safe retreat during the noisy activities.

On the Day of Construction

  • Create Hiding Spots: Place several cardboard boxes or allow your cat to choose their own hiding spots, such as inside a closet or under the bed.
  • Essential Supplies: Ensure that food, water, and litter boxes are readily available in the room where your cat will stay to prevent them from feeling the need to leave their safe space.
  • Pheromone Diffusers: Consider using a plug-in pheromone diffuser three days before the renovation begins. This helps stabilize their environment and eases their anxiety.

During Renovation

Xiao Mi emphasizes that on the day of construction, it is crucial not to frequently comfort or pet your cat as excessive attention may heighten their anxiety. Instead, allow them to remain in their familiar environment where they feel secure. If you are still concerned, you can stay in the same room as your cat but engage in your own activities, providing them with companionship without overwhelming them.

Professional Advice

"The effectiveness of these strategies can vary based on each pet's personality and circumstances. If you notice unique behaviors or signs of stress in your cat, consulting a professional trainer or veterinarian is recommended." - Xiao Mi, HowCat Trainer
