Extreme Cold Weather: Leaving Your Dog in the Car Could Be Fatal! Japan's Test Reveals: After 1 Hour with Engine Off, the Car Turns into a Frigid Icebox

Recently, a strong continental cold air mass and radiative cooling have affected Taiwan, leading to noticeable temperature drops across the island. In such weather, it is crucial not to leave dogs alone in cars, as this can expose them to unexpected dangers.

Many pet owners are aware that leaving dogs in hot cars during the summer is dangerous, yet they often overlook the risks associated with cold weather. Reports from Japan indicate that when the outside temperature is -10.2°C and the car interior is at 25°C, the temperature inside can drop over 15°C within just one hour after turning off the engine. After three hours, it can fall below freezing. This rapid temperature decline is much more severe than many realize.

Pet owners might think, "I will just be a minute," but during even a short shopping trip of half an hour or an hour, the car's interior can become as cold as a refrigerator. Dogs typically have a normal body temperature of around 38°C to 39°C; thus, a sudden drop in car temperature can lead to hypothermia symptoms such as shivering or even severe issues like arrhythmia or breathing difficulties. Even without hypothermia, exposure to cold can cause gastrointestinal discomfort and other health issues.

Moreover, cold weather can exacerbate chronic conditions in dogs, especially those with mitral valve insufficiency; dry and cold air increases the strain on their hearts. Different dog breeds also have varying tolerances to cold; for instance, breeds from warmer climates or those with single-layer coats are particularly sensitive to low temperatures. Puppies and older dogs naturally have weaker resistance and require extra care.

Therefore, even for brief shopping trips, it is advisable not to leave pets alone in cars. If absolutely necessary, ensure they are provided with warm clothing; however, the best practice is to have a family member stay in the car with them. After all, our dogs are our beloved companions, and we must prioritize their health and safety.
