Dog Goes Crazy Barking at the Curtains! Turns to See a "Super Huge Mouse" Running Wild, Expert Reveals Innocent Identity

On a hot day in Melbourne, a woman was startled by her dog barking incessantly at the window. Following her pet's gaze, she discovered a large furry creature on the curtain rod, which at first glance appeared to be an enormous mouse. This sight left her terrified, prompting her to capture a photo and seek help from experts.

Upon receiving the report, the Wildlife Rescuers identified the creature as a common brushtail possum, a marsupial native to Australia. Experts speculated that the young possum had likely become lost and sought refuge in the human home to escape the heat.

The brushtail possum, known scientifically as Trichosurus vulpecula, is nocturnal and typically resides in wooded areas. It is well-adapted to urban environments and often forages for food in gardens and backyards. While it may resemble a large rat, it is distinct with its bushy tail and prehensile grip that aids in climbing.

After being safely captured, the possum was taken to a veterinary clinic for examination. Although it was dehydrated and had sustained minor injuries, it was treated successfully and began to recover over several days. Eventually, the young possum was released back into the wild, disappearing swiftly into the trees, far from the curtain rod that had caused such alarm.

This incident highlights not only the adaptability of wildlife like the brushtail possum but also the importance of wildlife rescue organizations such as Wildlife Rescuers in Melbourne. Their efforts ensure that displaced animals receive the care they need and can return to their natural habitats.
