Captured! Formosan Black Bear Invades Beekeeping Farm in Hualien, Weighing Only 53 kg, Dehydrated and Weak

On January 26, 2025, a beekeeper in Zhuoxi Township, Hualien, Taiwan, discovered that his apiary had been invaded by a black bear. The Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency reported that the bear was found trapped in a snare designed for wild boars, which had been set up to protect local farms from wildlife intrusions.

The incident began when the beekeeper noticed damage to his beehives and reported it to the authorities. Upon investigation, forestry agents found that the same bear had previously raided a nearby vinegar workshop and another beekeeping site earlier in January. This particular bear was suspected of being responsible for multiple incidents involving honey theft.

Rescue Operations

A team of 21 forestry agents was mobilized to rescue the bear, which weighed approximately 53 kilograms and showed signs of dehydration and malnutrition. The bear was an elderly female with an old injury on her left front paw. After administering anesthesia and providing medical treatment, she was transported to the Wild One Conservatory and Animal Hospital for further observation.

Monitoring and Future Precautions

The agency has installed monitoring cameras around the apiary to check for any other bears that may pose a threat. So far, no additional bears have been detected in the area. To thank the beekeeper for his prompt reporting of the incident, the agency plans to provide compensation for his losses under the "Taiwan Black Bear Ecological Service Payment Scheme."

Community Awareness

The Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency has urged local residents to manage outdoor food sources and waste properly to avoid attracting black bears. They emphasized the importance of enhancing protective measures around beekeeping and livestock areas to prevent future encounters.

The agency continues to monitor the health of the rescued bear, who is gradually regaining her appetite. Once fully recovered, an assessment will be made regarding her release back into the wild.
