"Sharp Stone", a pitbull from Hsinchu County, Taiwan, has made significant progress in its training. After being confined for over 1,000 days due to its aggressive nature, the dog has learned to wear a muzzle and is now able to go for walks outside its enclosure. This breakthrough was achieved under the guidance of professional dog trainers.
"Sharp Stone" was forcibly taken into custody by the Hsinchu County Animal Protection Office in 2021 after it fatally attacked a drunk man who was teasing it. Although it was not euthanized, its aggressive behavior meant that no one dared to take it out for walks, effectively leaving it in a state akin to "life imprisonment". The situation was heartbreaking, and many felt sorry for the dog.
According to Peng Cheng-yu, the director of the Hsinchu County Animal Protection Office, the decision to keep "Sharp Stone" confined was not intended to punish the dog but to ensure the safety of its caretakers and prevent further harm. In October last year, the office hired a professional dog trainer to help "Sharp Stone" get accustomed to wearing a muzzle. The training process involved nine sessions, and by the end of it, the dog was able to wear the muzzle and go for walks.
"Sharp Stone" spent a total of 1,132 days in confinement. Some dog lovers have come to its defense, arguing that the tragic incident was a result of human error in handling the dog. They hope that "Sharp Stone" can find a suitable foster home. However, under current regulations, adopting a pitbull requires relevant experience and adherence to strict monitoring, and so far, no one has applied to adopt it.
Currently, "Sharp Stone" resides in a spacious, flat-style kennel. Due to its ongoing aggressive behavior, it is cared for by dedicated staff who assist it in wearing a muzzle before taking it out for walks. The goal is to continue training until its temperament stabilizes, at which point efforts will be made to find a suitable foster home for it to live out its life.
