Dog owners should be vigilant when walking their dogs on rainy days. Recently, "Qiu Bei," a disabled mixed-breed dog adopted from Bali Animal Shelter in New Taipei City, was diagnosed with leptospirosis.
Qiu Bei's Story
Mr. Sun, Qiu Bei's owner, noticed that Qiu Bei was lethargic, had a reduced appetite, diarrhea, and a high temperature. Prompt medical attention revealed a leptospirosis infection. Thankfully, after treatment, Qiu Bei has made a full recovery.
Qiu Bei, a special needs dog with a partial left foreleg and a missing paw on its right foreleg, was adopted from the Bali Animal Shelter two and a half years ago, already vaccinated.
Veterinarian's Advice
Veterinarians advise avoiding flooded areas or muddy fields after rain when walking dogs to prevent leptospirosis.
About Leptospirosis
Wu Ming-zhen, a veterinarian at the New Taipei City Pet Medical Center, explains that leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease spread by rodents through contaminated water, soil, or animal urine. It can severely affect the liver and kidneys and can be life-threatening.
Initial symptoms include fever, decreased appetite, and gastrointestinal issues, which can be easily mistaken for other illnesses, complicating diagnosis.
Leptospirosis has multiple serotypes, with symptoms ranging from mild to severe, including organ failure. While vaccination isn't 100% preventative, it significantly increases the chances of recovery if a dog becomes infected.
Prevention Tips
- Avoid flooded areas and undried muddy fields during walks.
- Ensure your dog receives regular vaccinations.
- Avoid stagnant water and contaminated soil.
- Monitor your dog's appetite and behavior closely.
Stay vigilant and protect your furry friends!
