In Hualien's Zhuoxi Township, a local farmer discovered a Formosan black bear active in the riverbed. The Hualien branch of the Forestry Agency noted that Taiwan's black bears are active year-round. Recently, a farmer named Pan observed what appeared to be an adult black bear foraging in the riverbed while traveling on a mountain industrial road. He quickly recorded a video, praising the conservation efforts, and reported the sighting to the Hualien branch of the Forestry Agency.
The bureau explained that Formosan black bears do not exhibit significant hibernation behaviors in Taiwan. They urged the public to report any sightings of black bear traces in mountainous areas promptly, as there is a chance to receive a reward for such reports. Farmer Pan Zhenlong mentioned that on the morning of January 20, while heading to repair an irrigation reservoir in the mountains, he noticed a black object moving in the riverbed. Upon closer inspection, he realized it was a large black bear, which he estimated to be an adult. After moving around in the riverbed, the bear waded towards the industrial road.
Pan described his mixed feelings of excitement and nervousness upon unexpectedly encountering the Formosan black bear. The bear was focused on foraging and eventually left on its own. Pan recorded a video to inform the Hualien branch of the Forestry Agency. Zhu Hezong, a natural conservation technology official at the bureau, stated that research indicates Formosan black bears are active throughout the year without significant hibernation behaviors. However, previous tracking records show that during winter, their activity range is smaller and they tend to remain in specific areas with abundant vegetation, such as mid-elevation forests.
Zhu reminded people that if they see traces of black bears in the wild, they should report it to the Forestry Bureau to receive promotional gifts. If bears approach populated areas, officials will provide guidance on safe interactions with bears and distribute bear deterrent items for residents' use. In cases where bears invade private property—such as orchards or homes—immediate reporting is essential so that preventive measures can be enacted and reward incentives offered.
This incident highlights ongoing efforts to coexist with Taiwan's endangered wildlife while ensuring public safety and promoting conservation awareness.
