Tainan's Anping Canal Filled with Dead Fish, Taiwan Environmental Bureau Responds

A large number of dead fish were found floating in Tainan's Anping Canal early today, causing a strong odor that has disturbed local residents. The sudden appearance of these dead fish has sparked widespread discussion, with many people expressing concern on social media platforms. Some have even speculated that this could be a sign of impending disaster, such as an earthquake.

According to reports from media outlets like Eastern Broadcasting and China Times, many Tainan residents took to social media to share images of the canal filled with dead fish, describing the scene as "terrifying" and complaining about the intense smell. Some noted that 92 bags of dead fish were cleared yesterday, only to be followed by another large batch today.

The Tainan City Environmental Protection Bureau responded to these concerns by stating that the primary species affected were tilapia, followed by milkfish and grey mullet. Preliminary investigations suggest that recent heavy rainfall from a typhoon increased the turbidity of the canal, affecting water quality. Low dissolved oxygen levels in the water were identified as the main cause of the fish deaths. The bureau has requested the Water Resources Bureau to enhance aeration operations to improve the situation.

This incident highlights the vulnerability of aquatic ecosystems to extreme weather conditions and underscores the importance of maintaining water quality to prevent such events in the future.
