Why Do Cats Get High from the Smell of Shoes? A Veterinarian Analyzes How Stinky Feet May Be Similar to Silver Vine

Do your pets have any peculiar habits? Earlier this year, the popular Japanese variety show "Monday Late Night" introduced a cat named Guppy. It is said that years ago, after smelling a guest's shoes, Guppy developed a fascination for shoe scents. Now, whenever guests arrive at home, Guppy rushes to sniff their shoes repeatedly, sometimes drooling with excitement and leaving them wet!

But why does Guppy enjoy smelling shoes so much? Let's explore insights from a veterinarian. Guppy, the male cat who became famous for this quirky behavior, absolutely loves the smell of shoes!

In March, during a segment investigating unusual anecdotes, "Monday Late Night" featured Guppy. The owner shared that years ago, a television crew visited their home, and after Guppy caught a whiff of one crew member's shoes, he became obsessed with shoe scents. Whenever guests come over, he enthusiastically sniffs their footwear as if trying to find that original scent again. The owner hopes to use the show's platform to locate that particular guest.

Since discovering the scent of the guest's shoes, Guppy has been "awakened!" He often sniffs guests' shoes for up to 30 minutes at a time! The owner remarked, "When he sniffs shoes, he drools profusely... so I often have to help dry the guests' shoes." They added, "While drying them, I can’t believe he can smell them for 30 minutes!"

So why is Guppy so enamored with shoe scents? Veterinarian Masuda Kunimitsu provided some insights: "The scent of certain people's shoes has scientific components similar to the smell of silver vine that cats love." He explained, "So when cats smell it, they experience feelings of happiness and excitement." As long as your feet emit the right aroma, your cat may just go wild for those shoes!
